We’re your Gardner Marine Engine specialists.

Gardner engines are known around the world for their durability, fuel efficiency and unmatched reliability (in fact, many consider them among the finest marine engines ever built).

And we’re known throughout New Zealand (and beyond) as the Gardner engine experts.

Here at Shaw Diesels, we’ve been rebuilding, restoring and servicing Gardner engines for over thirty years. Talk to one of our team and you’ll quickly appreciate the huge respect and deep knowledge we have for these iconic diesel marine engines.

Whether you’re looking at refurbishing a classic vessel, equipping your new boat with authentic Gardner reliability, or want to continue to get the best possible performance from your existing Gardner engine, we have the skills, technology and genuine spare parts to make it happen.

Gardner engine rebuilds.

Full engine rebuilds from one of New Zealand’s most experienced Gardner engineers.

Our Gardner rebuild specialist, Dave, has been pulling these engines apart and putting them back together for over thirty years.

He knows every model inside out — from the compact 3LW through to the big 8LXB — and he’s rebuilt more Gardner engines than most workshops have ever seen.

We regularly carry out full rebuilds on the 3LW, 5LW, 6LXDT, 6LYTI, 8L3B and 8LXB. That includes complete stripdowns, machining, new bearings, liners and seals, and a full test run before the engine leaves the workshop. Every rebuild is done to factory tolerances using genuine Gardner parts.

Our reputation for Gardner work extends well beyond New Zealand. We’ve shipped rebuilt engines and parts to vessel owners in Malta, Brunei, Papua New Guinea and across the Pacific. If you’ve got a Gardner that needs a new lease on life, chances are we’ve done the job before.

Sole distributor of genuine Gardner parts.

We love working on Gardner engines. And we’re proud to be New Zealand’s sole distributor of genuine Gardner parts and spares.

Gardner may have stopped manufacturing engines in the late-1990s, but thousands of them are still running — many with well over 100,000 hours on the clock. Keeping them going means having access to the right parts, and that’s where we come in.

We hold a comprehensive range of genuine Gardner parts in stock at our Auckland workshop, covering everything from gaskets, bearings and injectors through to cylinder heads, liners and turbochargers. If we don’t have it on the shelf, we can source it.

We supply parts across New Zealand and ship internationally to Gardner owners worldwide.

Used and rebuilt Gardner engines for sale.

We currently have a rebuilt Gardner 6LXDT available for sale.

You can’t buy a new Gardner engine.

Production ended in the mid-1990s, so the only way to get one is to find a good used engine or have one professionally rebuilt.

We do both.

Right now, we have a fully rebuilt Gardner 6LXDT on hand and ready to go.

It’s been completely stripped, inspected, machined and reassembled to factory tolerances with genuine Gardner parts — and fully test run before leaving the workshop.

Get in touch if you’re interested.

From time to time, we also have other rebuilt Gardner engines available, as well as used engines suitable for reconditioning. It’s worth knowing that under current New Zealand emissions regulations, only the 6XLB and 8LXB models can be sold as like-for-like replacements for existing installations.

If you’re looking at repowering a vessel with a Gardner, talk to us first — we can advise on what’s possible and what approvals may be needed.

Gardner engine gensets.

Gardner-powered generator sets — built, rebuilt and serviced by Shaw Diesels.

Gardner engines have a long history in power generation. Their low-speed, high-torque characteristics and legendary reliability made them a popular choice for standby and continuous-duty gensets — and many of those units are still in service today.

We service and rebuild Gardner engine gensets across New Zealand, whether it’s a routine overhaul or a full engine rebuild to bring an ageing unit back to peak performance. We can also build up custom Gardner gensets from rebuilt engines for owners who want that unmistakable Gardner dependability in their power supply.

If you’re running a Gardner genset and need parts, servicing or a rebuild, we’re the people to call.
