Automatic backup power for critical operations.

Standby generator systems with automatic transfer switching for hospitals, data centres, government facilities, water treatment plants, schools and commercial buildings.

A standby generator sits quietly until the mains fails — then starts automatically and takes over within seconds. No manual intervention, no downtime, no disruption to your operation. When the mains comes back, it transfers the load and shuts down again.

Shaw Diesels designs, supplies, installs and maintains standby generator systems from 13 kVA through to 770 kVA and beyond. We supply DEUTZ Power Solutions, Isuzu Power Solutions and Lister Petter generator sets paired with automatic transfer switches (ATS) and DSE control panels — configured for your specific site, load profile and compliance requirements.

How automatic standby power works.

Seamless switchover. No manual intervention. No downtime.

  • Mains monitoring — the ATS continuously monitors incoming mains power for voltage and frequency
  • Automatic start — when mains power fails, the generator starts automatically within seconds
  • Load transfer — the ATS transfers the building’s electrical load from the mains to the generator
  • Continuous power — the generator runs for as long as needed, maintaining full power to all connected circuits
  • Automatic return — when mains power is restored, the ATS transfers the load back and the generator shuts down
  • Ready and waiting — the system resets and waits for the next outage, requiring no manual intervention

Who needs standby power?

Any facility where a power outage would cause danger, financial loss, data loss, or disruption to essential services needs automatic standby generation. In many cases, standby power is a regulatory or compliance requirement — not optional.

Transfer switches and control systems.

The generator is only half the system. The automatic transfer switch (ATS) is what makes standby power truly automatic — detecting the mains failure, starting the generator, transferring the load, and returning to mains when power is restored.

Shaw Diesels supplies and installs ATS panels and DSE (Deep Sea Electronics) controllers as part of every standby generator system. We configure the control system to match your site’s requirements — including remote monitoring, load shedding, multi-generator synchronisation and SCADA integration for facilities that need it.

  • Automatic transfer switches — open or closed transition, configured for your load profile
  • DSE controllers — industry-standard Deep Sea Electronics controllers for generator management
  • Remote monitoring — web-based and mobile monitoring of generator status, fuel levels and fault alerts
  • Load shedding — prioritise critical circuits when generator capacity is limited
  • Multi-genset synchronisation — parallel operation for redundancy and staged load management
  • SCADA integration — connect your generator system to existing building management systems

Standby generators from 13 to 770 kVA.

Every generator in the DEUTZ Power Solutions DPS range is rated for standby (LTP) operation. Shaw Diesels also supplies Isuzu Power Solutions and Lister Petter generator sets for standby applications.

The right unit for your site depends on your connected load, your critical circuits, and whether you need the generator to power the entire building or just essential services.

We don’t just sell you a generator — we assess your site, calculate your standby load, specify the right generator and ATS configuration, install and commission the complete system, and set up ongoing maintenance so it’s always ready. For sites requiring capacity above 770 kVA, we can source and commission larger units or design multi-genset solutions.

Service contracts for standby generators.

A standby generator that hasn’t been serviced is a standby generator that won’t start.

Standby generators spend most of their life sitting idle — which means it’s easy to forget about them until you need them. Regular servicing is the only way to guarantee your generator will start when the mains goes down.

Shaw Diesels offers service contracts specifically designed for standby generators. We schedule regular maintenance visits, run load bank tests to verify the generator performs under real conditions, check fuel quality, replace filters and fluids, test the ATS and control systems, and confirm the generator is ready for the next outage.

We currently hold service contracts at high-profile standby sites including Auckland Hospital and the North Shore Treatment Plant.

  • Scheduled maintenance — regular visits based on calendar time, not just running hours
  • Load bank testing — verify the generator performs under full load conditions
  • ATS & control panel checks — test automatic transfer and fault detection systems
  • Fuel quality management — test and treat stored fuel to prevent degradation
  • 24/7 emergency call-out — priority response when your standby generator fails
  • Compliance reporting — documentation for regulatory and insurance requirements

24/7 emergency call-out.

Generator breakdowns don’t wait for business hours. Neither do we.

Shaw Diesels provides 24-hour, 7-day emergency call-out for generator failures across New Zealand. When your backup power is down and you can’t afford to wait, our team will respond — day or night.

Based in Auckland and Christchurch, with mobile service capability throughout New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. We regularly service generators in remote locations, island communities and offshore sites where getting the right engineer with the right parts is critical.
