Off-Grid    Lifestyle Blocks    Remote Properties    Backup Power    Pacific Islands

Reliable power for your home.

Diesel generators for off-grid homes, lifestyle blocks, remote properties and Pacific Island communities — from 5 kVA upwards.

If your home doesn’t have mains electricity — or can’t rely on it — a diesel generator is the most dependable way to keep the lights on, the water hot, and everything running. Shaw Diesels supplies, installs and services home generators for properties across New Zealand and the Pacific.

We’ll help you work out the right size generator for your home, handle delivery and installation, connect it to your switchboard, and set up a maintenance schedule so it’s always ready when you need it. Whether you’re building a new off-grid home, replacing an old generator, or adding backup power to a rural property — we’ve done it hundreds of times.

Who needs a home generator?

If your home depends on a generator for electricity — either full-time or as backup — it needs to be reliable, properly sized, and professionally maintained.

  • Off-grid homes — primary power for houses without mains electricity, including Great Barrier Island, Coromandel and remote rural areas
  • Lifestyle blocks — properties beyond the mains grid, or where the connection cost is prohibitive
  • Remote properties & stations — farms, rural retreats and backcountry homes where mains power isn’t an option
  • Pacific Island homes & communities — reliable generation for island resorts, villages and residential properties
  • Home backup — standby power for rural properties prone to mains outages from storms and line faults
  • Baches & holiday homes — seasonal properties in areas without reliable power supply

What size generator does your home need?

The right generator size depends on what you need to power and whether you’ll be running everything at the same time. The table below is a rough guide — but the best approach is to talk to us. We’ll assess your actual power requirements and recommend the right unit.

Key factors: total wattage of appliances running simultaneously, whether anything has a high starting load (heat pumps, water pumps, chest freezers), and whether you need single-phase or three-phase power.

Why diesel for your home?

If your generator is your main source of electricity — not just something you pull out once a year — diesel is the only engine type that makes sense. Diesel generators last longer, use less fuel, and cost less to run over time than petrol alternatives.

Diesel is also safer to store, which matters when your fuel tank is sitting next to your house. And because diesel engines are built for sustained running, they handle the daily workload of powering a home far better than petrol units designed for occasional use.

  • Longer engine life — diesel engines typically last two to three times longer than petrol equivalents
  • Better fuel economy — less fuel per kilowatt-hour means fewer trips to the fuel station
  • Lower running costs — less fuel plus longer service intervals equals significantly lower cost of ownership
  • Safer fuel storage — diesel is less volatile than petrol, safer to store at your property
  • Built for daily use — designed to run as a primary power source, not occasional backup
